The consumption of psychoactive substances and intoxicating beverages can generate significant risks to the health and safety of workers. These substances can affect the concentration, coordination, and judgment of workers who consume them, increasing the likelihood of workplace accidents.

How to prevent the consumption of psychoactive substances and intoxicating beverages?

To prevent the consumption of psychoactive substances and intoxicating beverages, it is essential for companies to adopt a clear policy for the prevention of the consumption of legal or illegal substances. This can help identify and mitigate the risks of consuming such substances, promoting safe work practices and protecting the integrity of all workers within their workplace, as well as a safe and healthy work environment. This is in accordance with the guidelines set forth by Decree 1072 of 2015 and Law 1566 of 2012, which establish the need to adopt measures to prevent the consumption of substances that can negatively impact worker performance and safety in the workplace, and require employers to implement occupational health programs that include the prevention of psychoactive substance and alcoholic beverage consumption.

Why is the implementation of a policy for the prevention of psychoactive substance and intoxicating beverage consumption important?

By establishing clear guidelines on substance use and offering support for addiction treatment, companies can improve the overall well-being of their employees and contribute to a healthier work environment. This, in turn, reduces absenteeism and increases the efficiency and productivity of the work team, while also reflecting the company's commitment to social responsibility, benefiting employees and corporate image.

Risks faced by companies that do not have this policy:

    1. Increase in Workplace Accidents: The absence of a clear policy can lead to an increase in workplace accidents due to the deterioration of the concentration and coordination capacity of workers who consume these substances.
    2. Reduction in Productivity: The consumption of psychoactive substances and alcohol can significantly reduce productivity, increasing absenteeism and presenteeism (attending work with low efficiency).
    3. Legal Problems and Sanctions: Failure to comply with labor regulations can result in legal sanctions, lawsuits, and a poor reputation for the company.
    4. Negative Work Environment: The lack of preventive policies can generate a toxic work environment, affecting the morale and well-being of all workers.

Aspects to consider for the implementation of the policy for the prevention of psychoactive substance and intoxicating beverage consumption.

    1. Initial Diagnosis: Conduct an initial diagnosis to identify the prevalence of substance use in the company and associated risk factors.
    2. Policy Development: Design a clear policy that establishes the norms and procedures related to substance use. This should include definitions, objectives, scope, and the consequences of non-compliance with the policy.
    3. Training and Awareness: Train all employees on the policy, its objectives, and the risks of substance use. Include awareness programs on prevention and addiction treatment.
    4. Monitoring and Evaluation: Implement mechanisms to monitor compliance with the policy and evaluate its effectiveness. Conduct periodic reviews and adjustments as necessary.
    5. Support and Treatment: Offer support and treatment programs for employees who need them, ensuring confidentiality and comprehensive support.

Thus, it can be concluded that the construction and execution of a policy on the consumption of psychoactive substances and intoxicating beverages is fundamental for any company seeking to maintain a safe work environment, comply with legal obligations, and promote the well-being of its workers. It is an investment in health and safety that, in the long term, translates into tangible benefits for companies and their personnel. Implementing this policy not only prevents risks and ensures legal compliance, but also improves productivity, the work climate, and the company's reputation.
